Silk Saree Care: Storage, Washing & Monsoon Tips

Silk rewards a little care with years of wear. Whether it's a Kanjivaram or a soft Banarasi, these habits keep the fabric and zari looking new.

Folding and storage

Refold sarees along different lines every few months so permanent creases never set, especially on the zari border. Store them in a cotton or muslin bag — never plastic, which traps moisture and yellows silk.

Dealing with humidity

In the monsoon, air your sarees on a dry day once a month. Tuck a few neem leaves or silica sachets into the wardrobe to keep damp and silverfish away.

Washing and stains

• Dry-clean genuine silk; avoid home washing for the first few cleans.
• Blot spills immediately — never rub.
• Keep perfume and deodorant away from the fabric; alcohol marks silk.

Pairing and reuse

An older saree gets a second life with a fresh blouse or a matching suit dupatta. Worn-out borders can be salvaged as trims for a lehenga.
